Firbank Grammar had a driving mission to nurture creativity and innovation in students through creating a new state-of-the-art Arts Precinct. Designed by PTID Architects, this redevelopment breathes new life into the school’s historic 1909 Louis Williams Hall, blending heritage charm with modern functionality.

The design retains the building’s original facade, form, staircase, and Juliet balconies, celebrating its rich history whilst introducing contemporary glass extensions that flood the interiors with an abundance of natural light.

Envisioned as a multi-modal learning environment, the hall needed to accommodate activities including ceramics, painting, sculpture, digital media, dance, and drama making it a vibrant hub for learning, performance, and community engagement. Ben Lornie, Director at PTID Architects, explains, “This landmark project reimagines the relationship that the original heritage building has to the school and its relationship with its students and the broader community.”

The Challenge and Solution

As a large, cavernous space with naturally hard and reflective surfaces, acoustics presented as a significant challenge early in the design process. As Ben states, “I wanted to ensure that sound was an asset not a barrier when experiencing the voluminous space.” Acoustically it needed to meet a nuanced set of needs for students and teachers as well as deliver on an ambitious target of being a key public space and learning environment.

Working collaboratively alongside PTID, our design team explored the challenges and opportunities for acoustics to be sensitively integrated into the existing heritage fabric. The outcome was a custom ceiling solution utilising strips of 12 mm Cube™ Acoustic Panel in Parthenon shaped into a honeycomb pattern. Each strip was fixed at various points using extrusions, then secured to a backing panel and fixed to the ceiling. The honeycomb pattern creates an eye-catching and modern sculptural feature that contrasts the surrounding brick surfaces and adds depth to the vast space. As Ben explains, “The acoustic performance is a custom response both aesthetically, as a contemporary insertion into a heritage fabric, but also functionally, to deliver high-performing attenuation to a heritage building with largely reverberant surfaces.”

Reimagining a Heritage Arts Precinct with Modern Acoustics

The Solution

Crafted from a minimum of 80% recycled PET, Cube’s rigid yet lightweight properties make it an incredibly versatile material, ideal for this application where a flat panel and custom shape is integrated into the design. Cube’s structural integrity allows it to hold form without additional framing, coupled with the freedom of flexibility which allowed PTID designers to push the boundaries and create a unique pattern while maintaining durability.

The result is a multipurpose space that inspires students and encourages collaboration and exploration. Firbank Grammar’s Arts Precinct exemplifies the school’s commitment to blending tradition with innovation and fosters a creative culture within the school and wider community.
