A transformed space for joyful learning

The project

At Moonee Ponds Primary School, ClarkeHopkinsClarke Architects revitalised the campus with a sensory-driven design that unites once-disconnected buildings into a cohesive “chain of learning”, fostering creativity, collaboration, and wellbeing. In creating a contemporary and engaging learning environment, the project team set out to achieve two key acoustic goals: managing reverberation and ensuring speech intelligibility.

The solution

The design integrates Autex Acoustics® Frontier™ Fins and Composition® throughout circulation zones, collaboration spaces, and quiet nooks—enhancing comfort, softening ambient noise, and maintaining the building’s distinctive character.

Frontier Fins, a carbon neutral ceiling and wall baffle system, were used to bring acoustic control to lively areas such as corridors and classrooms with a modular design that allows for tailored sound absorption. The chosen form visually reflects ripples on water and includes compatible surface finishes. Easy to install and highly adaptable, the system can be fine-tuned by adjusting spacing between individual fins, ensuring acoustic precision in every area.

Complementing this, Composition was applied across vertical surfaces including study nooks and classroom walls. Acting as both a decorative and functional wallcovering, it targets speech frequencies to improve clarity and create calm, balanced spaces. The robust, soft-touch surface is pinnable, hook-and-loop receptive, and resistant to fading and staining—ideal for busy educational settings. As a carbon neutral product, Composition also supports sustainability goals and aligns with the public education sector’s growing focus on low-carbon design.
